Q: Hey Dave,

I’ve got some nice looking chile seedlings that are just putting on their second set of true leaves.  As they do so, I’m repotting them into 3" Jiffy pots.  I’m wondering what kind of fertilizer I should apply at this stage (and until transplanting to the garden and outdoor pots).  Is Osmocote Outdoor/Indoor slow release plant food a good choice?  This is general-purpose granular stuff in an 18-6-12 ratio.  I was told this high nitrogen concentration is okay since it is slow release.  Any other suggestions, or can I use the Osmocote on my seedlings?

Thanks!

Karl

A: Hello Karl:

Despite the slow release, I think the nitrogen ratio is too high.   The high nitrogen amount encourages vegetative growth, not flowering.  Osmocote is okay for seedlings, but when they start to mature, I recommend Miracle Gro All Purpose, which is 15-30-15.
