Q: Hi Dave,

I bought a plant in Las Vegas and have also bought it in Texas.  I was born in Hawaii and these plants grew locally.  When mature they are a small bright red pepper.  Sometimes they are called decorative plants, and are not meant to be edible.  Do you know what these are called?  What is their associated Scoville rating?

A: Hello Scott,

The plants are called bird peppers, chiltepins, or chilipiquins.  They are edible and quite hot, up to 100,000 Scoville Heat Units.
