Dave,

This will be my first year to start up from seeds indoors. My question is I have a four-bulb fluorescent light fixture. Should I use four lights, should I use grow lights, and how high from the starting plants should the lights be. Let me know thanks and I love your web page.

Jim

Hello Jim:

You need to use all four growlight bulbs, as chiles need as much light as possible. After the seeds sprout, keep the lights about four inches above the seedlings. Remember the inverse square law–if you double the distance between the light and the seedlings, you reduce the light by a factor of four. Check the growing medium regularly to make sure that the heat from the lights doesn’t dry it out.
