Dave,
I am from Jacksonville, Florida, just a few miles from St. Augustine. I have a very large, bushy and seemingly healthy Datil plant that I have raised from a pup. As I said it looks healthy enough; however, upon setting a bloom and looking as if it might fruit; it will drop the bloom and not produce anything. Would you have any suggestions for this malady? I have been told that these particular plants are quite difficult. Every other pepper plant I have produces so much fruit that I’m either pickling or freezing the peppers in order to preserve them. Thanks for all you have done for all of us hotheads down South.

Mike:
Flower drop is usually caused by over-fertilizing, drought, or high air temperatures. It is difficult to diagnose pepper conditions long distance. Sometimes if you have a really healthy plant with lots of foliage and no pod production, it’s too much nitrogen. Hope this helps!
