Dr.BBQ,

My uncle-in law, Dave DeWitt told me to ask you for some info on an Oklahoma Joe’s smoker he gave to me. I need an external way to monitor the inside temp, while I am cooking. I tried a thermometer on the grilling surface, but it got gunked up to where I could not read it. What do you recomend?

Thanks, Max “DeWitt” Cisneros

Hi Max,

What you need is a BBQ thermometer that has a digital readout which stays outside the cooker and a cable that allows the probe to be inside the cooker. There are many options from a simple single probe that can be used for the temp of the cooker or the temp of the meat, up to a deluxe unit with dual probes and a wireless receiver that you can take in the house. The brands that I see the most are Polder, Maverick, Oregon Scientific, and there’s even one made by Weber.
