Q: Dear Dave,

I am writing an article on chile peppers related to weight loss and metabolism.  What are your thoughts on this?  Has any new research arisen?  Or, is there any consensus in the scientific community? I also wanted to know about the psychological addiction of chiles and how that differs from a physiological addiction.  Thanks for all your help,

Sincerely,

Diane Welland

A: Hello Diane:

I don’t know of any new research on either subject.  Eating spicy foods does burn calories, but only a small amount and probably not enough to make any difference.

Regarding addiction, the difference between psychological addiction and physiological addiction is that with psychological "addiction" there is a craving but no withdrawal symptoms.  For all of our articles on the subject of Chiles and Health, see: http://www.fiery-foods.com/dave/ndx_chilehealth.asp
