Vine Peppers?

Dear Dave:

A friend of mine just brought me a very small pepper (about 1 cm) very pungent, red when ripe and when I dissected it only found 4 seeds, almost no vein. The smell is very strong like a Bird pepper (Tabasco). Now this is the odd thing: She says it grows on a vine, I have never heard of such thing, but will plant the seeds out of curiosity. Have you ever heard of such a thing?

Sonia

Hello Sonia:

In some low light conditions, pepper habit can be a vine, as the plant struggles to reach more light. I’ve never actually seen this condition, but I’ve read about it. This could also be a figure of speech, like when people say they picked the tomato "right off the vine," or bought a "vine-ripened tomato."
