Q:  Hello Dr. BBQ,

I currently have an Egg but have been wanting to get a cooker for the masses.  I want something that I can do a whole hog on, or enough ribs for a large crowd.  My only restriction is that I will never go to the “dark side” and use gas.  I have found only one company that makes a wood fired cooker like I am wanting.  Any thoughts?

A:  Hi Dennis,

I love my Egg too but it sure can’t cook a hog.  There is a great hog cooker made in Cordele, Ga., by a man named Jimmy Maxey. I think he also calls them Papa’s Little Cookers. Good value and used by my buddy Myron Mixon who is about the best hog cook in the world. He is a past Memphis in May World Champion.  There is also a JR made in Arkansas not to be confused with J&R Oyler.   Holstein out of Iowa makes some beauties, mostly gas but they make some charcoal units.   Belson makes a nifty hog rotisserie.  Do a little poking around on the internet and you should be able to find all of these folks.
