What type of smoker do you recommend for a beginner? As well, what size for a family of seven would you suggest?

A. Hi Sean,
I like a smoker that has the fire under the food, as opposed to on the side. There are many different kinds, sizes, and prices. I endorse the Big Green Egg and it is a great smoker as well as a grill. I also like the FEC100 by Cookshack. Weber makes a cheaper one that seems to work pretty well too.
